The Incomplete Rationalism presents OFFICE projects through a critical analysis based on archive documents. It also reconstructs the influence of OFFICE’s creative principles among the new generations of architects. The OFFICE projects appeared in the early 2000s and gained prominence as new forms of digital collage with a cultural engagement. The author traces the evolution of their early ideas developed as paper architecture to the current buildings of a significant scale and presence. The underlying argument of the book demonstrates OFFICE’s ability to preserve in every project the spark of a theoretical construction, which in most cases is carried out according to a rigorous economy of means. Even the new monuments for public institutions continue to be illuminated by a creative tension of radical superiority. (RG)

On the occasion of the book launch, Roberto Gargiani (Professor Emeritus EPFL) will talk about OFFICE work with the architectural critic Christophe Van Gerrewey. The event will take place on Friday May 12th, 6.30—9pm at BOZAR Bookshop in Brussels.

OFFICE 374: KNOLL

SALONE DEL MOBILE IN MILAN

knoll -

OFFICE designed a new Knoll pavilion for the 2023 Salone del Mobile in Milan. The pavilion reconsiders what modernism stands for, reenacting some of its tropes — architecture and structure coincide in a flowing transparent space organised by a grid that makes room for the Knoll icons. This is a place that embraces the contemporary dilemma of parallel living and working, where leisure is not at odds with sustainability, with its structure easily dismantled and recombined in future versions. The pavilion will be open to the public during the Salone, from April 18 until April 23.

OFFICE 365: KIN GALLERY

OPENING

plan-kin

The new KIN Gallery occupies a storefront of an existing building. Oblivious to the curvilinear layout of the ground floor, the project is defined by the white box inserted in the middle of the space. The box is carefully positioned to conceal technical facilities on the fringes, while the overlapping of the existing, as-found perimeter and the regular geometrical figure makes two distinctive exhibition spaces—inside and outside of the box. This simple intervention gives different possibilities for exhibiting and experiencing art. The gallery will open with an exhibition of new works by Harald Thys and Jos de Gruyter on April 19th. You can find more info here.

ARCHITECTURAL WORKS FOR THE 21st CENTURY: THE INCOMPLETE RATIONALISM OF OFFICE

BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT

book

Roberto Gargiani, architectural historian and Professor Emeritus at EPFL, wrote a book on OFFICE. According to Gargiani, the book presents OFFICE projects “through a critical analysis based on archive documents. It also reconstructs the influence of OFFICE’s creative principles among the new generations of architects which was boosted by publications, as well as teaching of Geers and Van Severen in various schools of architecture, from Switzerland to the United States. The book traces the evolution of OFFICE’s early ideas developed as paper architecture to the current buildings of a significant scale and presence. The underlying argument of the book demonstrates OFFICE’s ability to preserve in every project the spark of a theoretical construction, which in most cases is carried out according to a rigorous economy of means.” The book is published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König.

OFFICE 276: JOSAPHAT

COMPETITION 1st PRIZE

josaphat bn

OFFICE is proud to announce the winning proposal for the former Josaphat marshalling yard in Brussels. The masterplan insists on a vast area of approximately 4 ha, where ten buildings are placed in dialogue with the existing vegetation, safeguarding green spaces continuity and managing rainwater to counteract heat islands. The new sustainable neighbourhood will host 500 housing units and common facilities such as a school, cafès and commercial spaces, amidst the park and pedestrian public spaces. Buildings share the same material language, recycled bricks, to dialogue with the abundance of vegetation, and play with different typologies to answer at best the dwelling needs and social mix. The process initiated by SAU and Brussels Bouwmeester started in 2017 and went through three design phases in the form of competitive dialogues.

In collaboration with A2RC, Karbon’, R2D2, WALD, Biotope, Concepto, Indigo, TVK, Up&Cie, Urban Water and VK, and Eiffage.

The office building in the heart of Brussels was recently delivered. The aim of the project is to resolve the corner of a diverse city block by composing three adjacent volumes of different heights and proportions to form an overall surface of 14’000m2 above ground. Each volume has its own architectural expression while sharing the same material language. The lower volume hosts the common spaces and visually connects the street to the inner garden through a generous double-height foyer. The higher volumes house the office spaces, making use of two generous roof gardens.

OFFICE 280: BRUSSELS BEER PROJECT

NEAR COMPLETION

IMG_3374

The new brewery for Brussels Beer Project is almost finished and its taproom will open to public by the end of the year. The building is located along the Brussels canal within the rapidly redeveloping industrial zone of Port Sud. It will accommodate the entire production of BBP, which counts more than 30 different beers. The brewery is designed to be exemplary in water recycling and energy management. The building itself is conceived as a compact and efficient industrial container, a rectangular box with an inclined roof that reveals its content while communicating the identity of BBP through its striped colours. The section of varying height accommodates a highly compact multi-level arrangement of the brewing machinery and vats in a series of table-like platforms connected with stairs. Akin to big pieces of furniture, these elements populate the space and are visible through the large glazed facade. The open plan enables a flexible organisation that can be altered as the technological requirements evolve.

OFFICE 331: LISTE ART FAIR

COMPLETED

LIste 01 Office kgdvs BP Web srgb

OFFICE, in collaboration with Richard Venlet, designed the exhibition space for the 2021 Liste Art Fair. The project was installed within Messe Basel and is conceived as a central ring structure that brings together over seventy participating galleries. Apart from gallery booths, the program requirements included different bars, cafés and magazine stands. The light partition walls of the central structure are strengthened by diagonal beams atop of it, which together form a crown-like frame. The radial distribution of exhibition booths along the inner and outer sides of the central ring is occasionally interrupted to enable access to the surrounding services and social spaces, as well as the central ‘sculpture piazza’ that will showcase eleven large-format sculptures. This central space, as a reminiscence of an enclosed public square, symbolically conveys the idea of a fair, where people meet and exchange, making the entire space in line with the aspiration of Liste to bring together artists, curators, collectors, and public at large. The motif of a half-circle is repeated throughout the space, making various furniture elements, including the entrance desk, a billboard, a bar, a magazine stand, and even a guirlande above the food and drinks corner.

OFFICE 229: LIBRARY

CONSTRUCTION STARTED

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0228.JPG

The foundations of OFFICE 229: LIBRARY  in Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium have been laid. The project is first of all a central gathering point. In the tradition of the cultural center, the library is set up as a large living space, shared by the residents of the municipality. A saddle-shaped roof is delimited by a circular perimeter. The perimeter cuts the roof shape into a distinctive figure in the center of the municipality, as anchor point, along the main public road. The rounded perimeter makes the main space of the library building. The library cabinets inside are built alongside and also carry the roof. The wooden cabinet wall defines the separation line between library spaces and municipality. In the round perimeter, a square figure makes both the reading garden and the polyvalent hall. The reading garden is the center of the library, as the ‘biggest room in the biggest house’ in the town.

OFFICE 275: ART ROOM

COMPLETED

Art room, a private commission in the Brussels municipality of Uccle has been completed over the summer. This single large room is dedicated to display and enjoyment of the owners’ art collection. The building is positioned next to an existing villa and is inserted in a steep slope of a garden, connecting two different height levels. On the higher level, the sliding door opens to a logistical lift to bring artwork down from the street level to the lower garden level. On the other side, a large window gives way to a roofed terrace overlooking the garden. A reflective inclined roof negotiates its surrounding context by following the slope of the context. The stacking of the simple concrete box inserted into the slope and the inclined roof makes a gap between the two, creating a perfect opportunity to take in natural light. The room finally provides a simple, yet comfortable double-height space, referring to the atelier typology with its shed roof.

The construction of the office building on Rue Belliard in the European Quarter in Brussels is well under way and is expected to be delivered by spring 2022. This project resolves the complex condition of the corner of a city block by means of three volumes of varying sizes, which together have a total surface of almost 14.000 sqm above ground. Each volume has its own architectural expression and character while all are finished in aluminium. The stepping configuration of these volumes makes spaces for roof gardens on two levels. The lower volume offers communal spaces within the building, its double height floors allowing passersby an extended view through the building and into the garden in the back.

OFFICE is designing its first private project in Sweden for the owners of the Brussels-based gallery Spazio Nobile. Situated amidst an impressive landscape overlooking a forest and a lake, the holiday home is positioned on a slope and supported by a set of twenty-five columns. The house is approached from the road above, making the roof a prominent fifth façade. The roof is cladded in aluminum sheets and softly reflects the surroundings, allowing the house to dissolve into the landscape while protecting it from the harsh weather. Three elements – a chimney and two aluminum screens that provide access to the roof, are placed on top of it as functional objects. Inside, four glass rooms are inserted meticulously into the landscape of columns, creating both private space as well as a loosely organized open field.

DEMOLITION COMPLETED

IMG_9339

The demolition phase of the project SHS Halls School in Antwerp is now completed. The project, an ecological transformation of the durable structure of an old slaughter house by the canal Lobroekdok in the north of Antwerp, converts the existing structure into a new chemistry campus for Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool. The project reorganises the building into a set of classrooms and laboratories by adding an additional storey to the building with a new self supporting concrete plate that sits on round columns. Mezzanine structures are added on top of this new floor to use the height of the existing shed roof for technical utilities. The newly proposed circular pattern perforates the existing facade, transforming the previous utilitarian structure into a qualitative environment for education. In addition, a new tower building proposed next door will accomodate classrooms and administration.

OFFICE 291: DESIGN MUSEUM GENT

COMPETITION, 2ND PRIZE

OO3601B-IMAGE 1

Our proposal ‘KAMERS VOOR DESIGN’ (Rooms for Design) came 2nd place in the selected competition for the extension of the Design Museum in Gent. The project proposed to solve the highly ambitious and complex set of questions posed by the context and the brief by a simple act, the stacking of various geometrical figures one on top of each other. Together with a concrete slab defined by the perimeter of the site, these figures offer various spaces on each floor – a clearly defined room with the main museum functions, terraces as residue spaces of the slab, and anti-chambers on the courtyard side, solving the complex question of circulation through 3 different parts of the museum. Finally, this stacking of rooms allows to create a respective addition to the existing facade on the courtyard side while giving a dynamic and interactive face towards the city of Gent.

In collaboration with Richard Venlet, muller van severen, Bollinger+Grohmann, Henk Pijpaert, Bureau Bouwtechniek, Jan De Moffarts, Thomas Stroobants, and Maniera.

OFFICE 227: TONDO

BRUSSELS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

TFA8RG~6

The steel roof structure of OFFICE 227: Tondo has been installed on the site. OFFICE has previously won the competition for the Federal Belgian government.  This elevated footbridge connects the House of Representatives’ offices with its recent extension, the new Forum Building, on the other side of the Leuvensestraat in the centre of Brussels. The bridge not only surmounts the height difference between the two buildings with a single accessible slope, but provides a generous space, rather than simply a technical solution. Suspended over the street, the tilted disc will be coated with mirrored panels, concealing its interior, while reflecting the surrounding. The oculus will be finished in curved glass. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

STUDIO AT HARVARD

AN AMERICAN SECTION

Kersten Geers and David Van Severen have been appointed the Kenzo Tange Chair at GSD Harvard for the fall 2019 semester. This will be the second studio of a series focusing on American Architecture. After An American Plan, the investigation into simple drawing tools of architecture continues with An American Section. Following up on the notion of American corporate education, it raises a question for Harvard campus: how to embrace the reality of market development, tech startups, medical and biological research centers, without renouncing the collective values of an educational facility. If an architectural ambition can be reduced to the detail of an envelope, then the section seems to be the right tool.

In parallel, a new studio will kick off at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, embracing an all-inclusive fiction of European Architecture, with its first iteration of a comprehensive studies of TUTTO.

OFFICE 280: BRUSSELS BEER PROJECT

COMPETITION, FIRST PRIZE

interior terrace

OFFICE has won the competition for a new brewery for Brussels Beer Project, a young local beer brewery with growing popularity in and beyond Belgium.  The winning proposal takes the opportunity of its location at the brim of the Brussels canal to the maximum. The project follows the concept of a ‘boîte magique’: a super efficient industrial container, topped with a large inclined roof, which makes its content visible to all sides. Rooted in the canal area of Brussels, the project communicates its strong character and ambition: a building dedicated to the production of 35 000 hl of beer per year, that willingly invites the public to witness and sample its products. OFFICE was chosen out of 52 candidatures and 4 final proposals, by a jury involving members of Canal Brussels, bMa and the BBP community, amongst others.

OFFICE 227: TONDO

CONSTRUCTION SITE STARTING

227-tondo-collage-street1-LQ

The project is a ring-shaped pedestrian bridge connecting the two buildings of the Federal House of Representatives in Brussels, on either side of the Leuvensestraat. Suspended between the facades of the two buildings, it makes a generous ‘walkabout’ around a central void. The first step in the construction consists of the careful dismantling of certain facade elements of the historic building.

OFFICE 260: YALE UNION, PORTLAND, OREGON

PROJECT UNDER DEVELOPMENT

news-yale_union_2

OFFICE is currently working on a mixed-use project for Yale Union, a Portland, Oregon (US) based contemporary art centre. Located on a seismic active zone, the existing brick buildings built in the early 1900’s prove to become structurally insufficient for today’s standards, and will need a so-called ‘seismic upgrade’. A new tower, containing a series of flexible rentable spaces as apartments, offices and artist studios, will provide both structural and financial support to the renovation of the existing complex.  Under the new volume, a large outdoor space open towards the street defines a new public interface for the complex: a room for Yale Union.

OFFICE 247: TIM VAN LAERE GALLERY, ANTWERP

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Tim Van Laere Gallery

We’re proud to announce that construction has started on the new Tim Van Laere Gallery in Antwerp (BE). The gallery will occupy a landmark position on the New South district, a project by developer Triple Living, not only through its location, but also through its function.

The building will be explicitly urban, ambiguous and direct: with its gate on the street. As a concatenation of rooms, the building ‘shows’ its structure in its silhouette. A storage space, offices, a white cube, a chapel and a patio follow each other, as pure types of buildings where art can be experienced in different ways. The building makes a statement for both its immediate surroundings and inside; art is the central focal point and is immediately visible and accessible to everyone.

“It will be a building tailored to art and the artists. They remain the most important motivation for me,” explains Tim Van Laere. “I consider Tim Van Laere Gallery as a real artist gallery, where our main task is to support and facilitate artists. It is very important that the space of the gallery also fits within that story.”

Completion and opening is planned in the spring of 2019. For more information on the project, see the article in De Morgen here (in Dutch).

STUDIOS AT HARVARD AND EPFL

AN AMERICAN PLAN / ARCHITECTURE FOR MUSEUMS

Studios led by OFFICE have kicked off at both the Harvard School of Design, and in the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne. The studios are editions 31 and 32 of the ongoing ‘Architecture Without Content’ series. In Harvard, the studio ‘An American Plan‘ attempts to connect a fascination for the plan with a question for Harvard campus: is it possible to make a project for a Harvard forum of one floor? At EPFL, ‘Architecture for Museums’, a studio devoted to the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel will travel to Naples and Berlin, investigating how a romantic obsession with the south could render classicism into an ‘urban’, or at least territorial, tool. As always, the results of the studios will be published as additions to the Architecture Without Content booklet series. Previous editions are available through the FORM shop.

OFFICE 224: CO-HOUSING VETTENBURG, GHENT

CONSTRUCTION STARTING SOON

OFFICE 224: VETTENBURG CO-HOUSING

Construction will start soon on the Vettenburg co-housing project, located in the city centre of Ghent (BE), with the building permit recently obtained. By a systematic composition of outdoor spaces, an old cluster of warehouses will be converted in a collection of atelier-houses and green spaces, weaving through the narrow deep building plot. The existing main building will be renovated and topped by a identical atelier-house, with views over the river front.

OFFICE 252: QUARTIER KANAL

COMPETITION, 2ND PLACE

OFFICE 252: QUARTIER KANAL

The proposal ‘Quartier Kanal’ by OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen and Christ and Gantenbein came second in the prestigious Kanal Centre Pompidou competition for the transformation of the Citroën showroom and workshops in Brussels to a multifaceted large-scale cultural center. OFFICE and C&G were selected to participate in the competition out of 92 candidatures. The project proposed to house all museum and archival functions in two new volumes, thus liberating the 30’s industrial hall structure from all technical and practical constraints and allowing it to function as an enormous covered public space. Our team was complemented by Richard Venlet (museography), Jan De Moffarts (restoration), Bollinger+Grohmann (structure), Arup (climate), Bureau Bas Smets (public space) muller van severen (public furniture) and ELD (cost control).
We congratulate the winners.

The project as well as all the other proposals, can be seen in this brochure, and will be on display in the Citroën Showroom, in the CIVA-curated exhibition ‘As Found – Prospective Heritage‘. The show is part of ‘Kanal Brut’, the temporary opening of Kanal in the current infrastructure which will run for the next 13 months.
