KUNSTMUSEUM – St. Gallen
The extension of the Kunstmuseum in Sankt Gallen is restricted to an enlargement of its basement level, forming an underground pedestal to the 19th century building above. Its plan reproduces the typical organisation of the upper neoclassical exhibition floors, liberating it from numerous existing columns through the introduction of a new structural concrete ceiling. The pattern of the glazed brick floors mirrors the line of the beams. Specific light conditions of this new level are provided by perforations in the vaulted ceilings of the low side rooms, their punctured roof being the only visible exterior feature of the extension.
