ARVO PÄRT CENTRE – Laulasmaa
Conceived as a large house in a dense pine forest near the Baltic Coast, the centre combines the archive, performance venue and working space of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Echoing local building traditions, massive wooden walls transform the square plan into an enfilade of rooms whose footprint and height gradually increase in line with the slope of the roof. Depending on their size and relative position, these rooms can accommodate various functions including offices, a library, concert hall and outdoor patios. This sequence is occasionally interrupted by masonry cores of varying heights – a chapel, vaults and chimneys – that protrude through the timber beams and glass roof, bringing inside the pristine outdoor environment.
