OFFICE 187
OLYMPICOPOLIS – London
The competition entry for the new cultural district on the site of the 2012 London Olympic Park proposes an ensemble of five buildings designed by three different practices. Two of the buildings are by OFFICE. The first one, the Sadler’s Wells East Theatre, is a three-storey cylinder organised around a central hall, with circulation and technical spaces pushed to the margins. The theatre connects to the second building – the Additional Institution – via a shared terrace and ground floor. This rectangular eight-storey tower is positioned at a tangent to the cylinder and conceived as a flexible container to accommodate various complementary programmes defined by a 12.5m x 12.5m structural grid. Behind the brick facades of both buildings dark blue steel trusses frame the interiors.
