HOUSING COMPLEX (HAVENLAAN) – Brussels
A new housing complex forms part of the redevelopment of the Brussels Canal from an industrial and commercial area into a mixed-use neighbourhood. Designed in collaboration with Nicolas Firket Architects and Bureau Bas Smets, it consists of three small towers facing the canal and one low linear block facing a residential street to the rear, with a semi-public garden in between. Together, the four buildings form a permeable urban ensemble that negotiates different features of the site: the volumes share a similar character and finishing in coloured concrete panelling, yet each has a distinct facade composition. The complex sits atop an underground car park that once served the bank building which previously occupied the site. The various types of housing – row houses, apartments and studios – are combined with a hotel and commercial spaces. The positioning of the slightly rotated towers allows for expansive views towards the canal and the city, and draws the green landscaping of the canal zone deep into the site.
