ART SITE – Bruges
A Kunsthal is not a museum. It is a showplace with pragmatic flexibility. A machine that can accommodate various exhibitions in an efficient manner. After all, a Kunsthalle must be at the service of showing, but showing is different every time. A place for large and small objects, a labyrinthine place, and a place with an overview. This Kunsthal for Brugge aims to be an accessible place, able to receive large numbers of visitors, but also able to be intimate for the individual visitor. The Kunsthal is structured as a building figure with three parallel bands. The exhibition spaces are framed between a generous entrance on the one hand, and an efficient archive and storage area on the other. The exhibition spaces themselves are arranged as two large volumes with controlled natural light and a specific visual relationship to the park and the forecourt.
