OFFICE 324
RADIO & TELEVISION BUILDING (VRT II) – Brussels
The new headquarters for Flemish Radio and Television (VRT) is a compact horizontal building with the ambition of a contemporary media factory. It forms part of the Mediapark in Brussels, which also includes the headquarters of the Belgian French-language public broadcaster (RTBF), various media-related companies and schools, housing and services, all integrated within a park that spreads over 20ha. The project consists of two stacked volumes: an octagonal sunken base and a square volume pierced by patios. The base has multiple facades that face the city and the forest, shaping four different outdoor spaces. This block contains the main foyer and the related public programme, the television studios, logistics spaces, archives and parking. The upper volume has open floor plans over three levels. Movable walls allow for rooms to be easily reconfigured to adapt to the ever-evolving dynamic workspace of media production. The only fixed elements of the plan are the cores and green patios, which are envisioned as enclosed accessible gardens.
