CARE CENTRE – Brussels
This project is a residence and day-care centre for young adults with multiple disabilities. While the centre is a private facility, the aim was to encourage public access and activities shared with the neighbourhood. To convey a sense of domesticity, but also openness and inclusivity, the building takes the form of a large gable-roof house that stretches across the entire length of the plot. The plan is organised by a sequence of lozenge-shaped spaces that make smaller and larger rooms, and private and public areas. This is carried through into the section, where the ceiling height varies from the private rooms to the double-height music room. The two-storey building is partially sunk into the sloping terrain, making an overhang to the rear – a covered exterior space that encloses a small animal farm, as well as a private garden. The topography thus allows the building to be easily accessible, but also detached from the ground, creating a protected universe. The different indoor and outdoor spaces are unified and covered by a wide roof. The roof is pierced by three circular holes that are precisely positioned to bring light deep into the common areas of the building.
